温度传感器IC充分利用了硅PN结所具备的线性度和预知的温度特性等优势。由于这些IC都是采用常规半导体工艺制成的有源电路，可提供各种外形封装。它们具备许多功能，例如：数字接口、ADC输入、风扇控制等，这是其它技术无法提供的。温度传感器IC的工作温度范围可低至-55℃、高达+125℃，部分产品的温度上限可以达到+150℃左右。以下介绍了常见的温度传感器IC。
模拟温度传感器
模拟温度传感器IC将温度转换成电压，有些情况下则转换成电流。最简单的电压输出模拟温度传感器只有三个有效端：地、电源输入和信号输出。其它具有增强功能的模拟传感器提供更多的输入或输出，例如比较器或电压基准输出。模拟温度传感器利用双极型晶体管的温度特性产生与温度成比例的输出电压。对这一电压信号进行放大并施加一定的偏置，可以使传感器输出电压与管芯温度建立适当的变化关系，获得较高的温度测量精度。例如，DS600业内精度最高的模拟温度传感器，在-20℃至+100 ℃温 度 范 围 内 保 证 误 差 小 于±0.5℃。
本地数字温度传感器
将模拟温度传感器与ADC集成在一起，即可形成直接输出数字信号的温度传感器。这种器件通常称为数字温度传感器或本地数字温度传感器。“本地”表示传感器测量的是自身温度。这种工作方式相对于远端传感器，后者用于测量外部IC或分立晶体管的温度。基本的数字温度传感器只是简单地测量温度，温度数据通过各种特定接口读取， 接口类型包括： SPI/3线、I2C、1-Wire和PWM。复杂的数字传感器具备更多功能，例如： 高温/低温报警输出、设置触发门限
的寄存器及EEPROM等。Maxim提供多款本地数字温度传感器，包括DS7505和DS18B20，能够在较宽的温度范围内保证±0.5℃的精度。
远端数字温度传感器
远端数字温度传感器又称为远端传感器或二极管温度传感器。远端传感器用于测量外部晶体管的温度，可以采用分立晶体管，也可以采用集成在另一IC内部的晶体管。微处理器、现场可编程门阵列(FPGA)及ASIC往往包含一个或多个温度传感器，通常称为温度二极管，与远端温度传感器具有一个重要优势：可以利用单片IC监测多点温度。
